The state of Alagoas in northeastern Brazil is Ana Maia’s home. With a degree in architecture and urban studies as well as a tireless interest in the arts, she was invited in 1994 to direct the Artistic Council for the Foundation of Culture and Art of the State of Alagoas. Despite her public activities, Ana has continued to produce the hand-painted lamps that are her signature art form.
She relies on indigenous designs from nature and from the mythology and rituals of the native population to create her works. Using handmade parchment from traditional mills in Italy, she paints the surface to produce the unique spacing and formats that are characteristic of her work. Ana participates in art expositions throughout the world, most recently in Paris and Milan, and exhibits her work in galleries in Brazil, North America, and Europe.
