“In 1996, while walking along the rails of the Long Island Railroad, I happened to glance up and catch the sun's reflection on two large pane windows in an old industrial building. Through the glare I noticed that the space was empty. Curious, I walked to the front of the building and noticed that the New York subway also ran in front of this building. Staring at the facade, and hearing the screeches of the N train passing by over my head, I caught my breath, and made my way to the superintendent’s office to inquire about the space. I was preparing myself for the sure let down when the superintendent opened the doors and I looked out of the large windows down at the tracks of the Long Island Railroad. My intrigue led me to discover that two floors in this old industrial building were vacant and remarkably available for rent. Instantly, I decided to make this my studio in New York City.”
Today, at the foot of the Queensboro Bridge, overlooking the skyline of midtown Manhattan, Eduardo Milierisdesigns his limited edition wristwatches. Inspired by the treasures he still finds walking along the railroad tracks of his backyard, his work includes large wall clocks and a series of "Pendulariums" — large oxidized boxes that hold as many as 20 pendulums and second hands.
Today, Milieris, the creator of Watchcraft designs, spends more time with e-mail than with cartoons, but his childlike curiosity has not diminished. It has taken him from Montevideo, Uruguay, where he grew up, to New York City, from aspiring artist to successful entrepreneur and world-class metalsmith. Since founding his studio in 1994, his limited-edition watches have become collectors’ items, with one recently fetching $1,750 at an online auction.
The handcrafted Watchcraft® collection with its antiqued brass, copper, and silver bands, and the hand painted dials, creates the feeling of a wristwatch long lost, now found. Milieris does not seal the distressed and oxidized metals with a protective finish, to allow the wearer of the watch to become a participant in the evolution of the piece. Air, temperature, and the skin of the wearer all change the inherent molecular structure of the metals, resulting in a wristwatch that is most uniquely their own.
Looking ahead to the future of metal techniques, Milieris meshes clean lines and brushed surfaces. The Milieris Titanium Collection is machined from solid blocks of the element, creating a visionary light and durable wristwatch. The Milieris Silver Signature Collection, remains grounded in timeless, classic style. Sterling silver is precisely crafted into elegant cases, then fitted with Swiss engineered movements. Each is then signed and numbered individually. Milieris limited edition sterling silver wristwatches are finished in fine silver to delay the tarnishing process.
