Holly Berry/Fresh PaintHolly Berry has spent her career designing and creating art that is both functional and decorative. Fresh Paint came into existence in 1999 when, as a gallery manager, Holly saw the need for affordable fiber art. Using her passion for color and ability to break tradtion, she came up with fiber wall hangings that have a hint of traditional quilts, with a contemporary flare. Inspired by a trip to Australia, she saw aborgines painting on canvas in their dry river beds. Her love for the outdoors, passion for color, and the desire to create was combined with the lovely experience of painting outside on large pieces of muslin. The abstract representational pieces of nature are filled with warm earth tone colors that bring the rich landscape into the interior environment where it is displayed.
A graduate of Indiana University, her fine arts experience helped lay the foundation for technique and form. Now Holly has devoted herself fully to creating wall hangings that are unique, ever-changing and filled with the richness of inspiration.
"My love for textiles drove me to experiment with contemporary wall art and explore new techniques for fiber design," explains Berry. Her fabric wall hangings are a composition of hand-painted surface design on muslin using a five-layer process of coloration. Sponging, brushing, and hand stamping are incorporated into the finished design.
Berry's affinity for color changes with each piece, where she allows the medium of paint and water to play a part in the process of creating the work. She tries to balance controlled technique with random movement of the paint and spontaneous blending of multiple color to capture the mood she's trying to create.
The finished designs are framed with complementary fabric, mixing traditional quilt piecing with a contemporary work of art. Custom work is also available in specific colors and sizes. Wall hangings can be made to hang vertically or horizontally.
