Kim Caisse/Bee DesignKim Caisse has worked in clay since 1984, when she first fell in love with the medium in a high school class in Maryland. Pre-Columbian American pottery and its adventurous sense of form was an early source of inspiration. She continued her education in clay at Washington University in St. Louis, while earning a BA in comparative arts. This was a program of study that included ceramics, as well as comparative literature, Japanese language and literature, and costume design. Her designs are influenced by her fascination with historical decorative arts in many media from around the world. While working in costume at Repertory Theater of St. Louis and Opera Theater of St. Louis, she studied ceramics at a local studio the year after graduating. She then went to Japan to teach English for two years.
While there she had the opportunity to study with a potter in a nearby town, and traveled extensively to see traditional pottery making villages and meet potters and other craftspeople working in a variety of media. After completing her teaching contract, she worked for six months as an apprentice to another potter, living at the studio and assisting with teaching a weekly ceramics class in Japanese and with all aspects of production.
She now lives and works in Madison, Wisconsin, and enjoys doing occasional art fairs there and in Milwaukee and Chicago, with boutiques and galleries also carrying her work. She is grateful to have this chance to feel the power art has to build community.
Caisse's line of jewelry is hand sculpted and features random shapes "sketched" and then cut freehand from a sheet of earthenware clay and reflects a mixture of all these influences. Glazes are a dreamy palette of matte and gloss colors.
